Often when blues music become a sample for electronic music producers, the results are uneven. Either the icy beats rob the blues song of all its power, or the sampled voice are so annoying and wrong for the setting that you just can’t finish the track. Blues guitarist, Jan Mittendorp, under the moniker, miX & Dorp (mixendorp) has taken a bit more time with the production to make Blues + Beat an even and engaging modern blues set. A key ingredient here is the live vocal work of Mississippi blues artist, Boo Boo Davis, with whom Mittendorp plays guitar. Highlights are the house-music (sans the acid tweaks) leaning cuts, “Who Stole The Booty”, “Bad Luck”, the reggae-dub movement in “Keep On Loving Me Baby” and “Revolution Bluez”, and the funk/disco number, “Ain’t Good Lookin'” served on a groove that would make the late Johnnie Taylor proud.
