From Santiago, Chile, pop sensation Alex Anwandter grabs elements of late 80’s/early 90’s freestyle and house and presents a video tribute to the classic queer ballroom film, Paris Is Burning, for his latest single “Cómo Puedes Vivir Contigo Mismo” (translation: “How Can You Live With Yourself”), from his second solo release (his first under his own name), Rebeldes. Like the “children” or street kids who continue to find their friendship and support in joining a “house” and participating in the ball scene, the song lyrics mimic the questions that other people may pose to these kids not understanding their feelings of freedom and pride.
Y aunque digan que es malo/yo me siento en el cielo
(And though they say it’s bad/I’m in heaven)
With that idea, it could be said that song comes off similar to George Michael’s declaration in “Freedom (90)”. Or it could just be a someone’s slice-of-life tale. Enjoy and decide for yourself.
