It’s been a little while since we’ve been able to share poetic thoughts from Dallas-based writer Gayle Bell, however she’s back with a new piece inspired by Stevie Nicks’ cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin”.

Free Fall Sundays Like This

We are cheeks smiling

The camera winks

I consign memory of freckles

to sustain me

Intimacy a gauntlet I fail

I am life as a misfit rootless

It’s not as if I have never had

(I’m afraid to want)

your soft love

We were mutual hostages

taking all liberties

Portions of me wanted

home knowing hubris

the other wants Don Quixote roads

I miss you on Sunday’s like this

sweating wrapped in each other

Playing lady and rogue

each moan goading my bull passion

Now memories of tears

silent agony

I retreat inward to fantasy

Petty’s “Free Fallin” looping in my mind
